From Trash to Fashion Accessory: Potato Chip Bag Purses Crafted in Honduras

What better way to control the problem of excess trash than to convert garbage to useful products? Five Accessories, a retailer specializing in all-natural handbags and other fashion accessories, now carries a unique line of purses crafted from Potato Chip bags by Honduran craftswomen.

This line of ecologically friendly handbags is the outgrowth of a Fair Trade Project by the women of Honduras, created as a solution to the growing ecological damage in the country related to burning trash. Made from potato chip bags, this product contributes to a healthy and clean community in Honduras.

The handbags come in three sizes: small, medium and large, and the elaborate process results in either a metallic silver or colorful design Prices range from $25-$45. A portion of each sale is donated to the community in which the bags are crafted. For more information on retail outlets or online ordering, see www.FiveAccessories.com.

Brilliant! And Beautiful!

Hey, Mary! I am curious about the handbag project. I am a Franciscan friar, or monk, in Comayagua, Honduras, and a woman we know makes similar bags. I wonder if she is part of the co-op. Where in Honduras are the women located who make the bags?

Thanks.

Hi Paul! This is Christine from Five Accessories. Yes, the woman who make the bags out of recycled chip bags are from Comayagua, Honduras. The internet is such a wonderful way to connect people. Hope this helps.
